“In 100 Years…” is a song by German pop group Modern Talking. It was released in November 1987 on Ariola Records. The track is the only single from the band’s sixth album, In the Garden of Venus. It was the duo’s final release before their split later that year.
The song is about a person who believes that the current lack of empathy and understanding may lead to a dystopian future in which feelings, including love, are illegal, and in which expressions of romance and humanity will be only a distant memory.
“In 100 Years…” appears to have strong apocalypse themes. With a strong emotional depth that veils a hidden fear of losing the meanings of “true” love, the song displays an apocalyptic vision of the world whose existence relies basically on certain values like love. This song predicted the effects of cyberspace on human life and the danger of falling into supposedly virtual love that lacks genuine human contact and closeness, so love becomes illegal since it requires more effort to differentiate between true and pseudo love. Genuine human values become rare and need time, energy and focus to excavate and locate.
The video emphasized notions of war and general breakdown in the concept of humanity. Dieter Bohlen captures the idea well with an excellent back-track.
