Acura
It does not get much simpler than this when it comes to car names. The Acura Performance EV Concept, which made its debut in Monterey, California, is a design study intended to serve as a sneak peek at an electric-powered high-performance Acura vehicle in the works.
The Performance EV Concept is not that far from going into production if you look past some of the more futuristic styling cues, like doors without external handles. It has a long wheelbase, a pointed front end, and a fastback-style roofline that are evocative of the 2010 model ZDX. If you think the front end looks boat-like, you are on to something because Acura says its designers were influenced by hydrofoil superyachts.
Technical specifications are still unknown because Acura has not disclosed them. What is known at this point is that the concept is fully electric (no mention of a hybrid or plug-in hybrid system) and that it is based on a new platform that the brand is currently developing internally. This is significant because Acura’s first electric vehicle, the ZDX, is currently based on a platform supplied by General Motors.
As the crossover moves from a concept to a production vehicle, more information about Acura’s Performance EV Concept will become available in the upcoming months. The final model will be produced in Ohio by parent company Honda and is expected to launch by the end of 2025. That is not as strange as it might seem: Honda has its headquarters in Japan, but it started producing Acura cars in the United States almost thirty years ago.
It is anticipated that certain design elements from the Performance EV Concept will find their way into future Acura electric vehicles. The company’s design executive, Dave Marek, promised in a statement that “the Performance EV Concept introduces a number of design themes that will be seen on future Acura vehicles, as with our previous Acura concept vehicles.” In other words: Wait and see.
